Final Post

This semester for Practicum I was heavily involved in Wellness TV and the Interlachen. I also turned in some photos of my spot news to The Southern. In Wellness TV I did a variety of things including write scripts, camera work, stand up reporting, voice recorded reporting, interviews, I helped edit from time to time with Michelle and Tosha, and I was also involved in the brain storming sessions with the group as a whole and with the individual packages groups. I had a lot of fun with Wellness TV and that is where the bulk of my Practicum hours and efforts went too. For Interlachen I was mainly a photographer. I took pictures of sports, campus events, club events, and sorority/fraternity events. I also wrote a paper for Interlachen on Convocation. It is still incomplete because it must cover all the Convocations so it is an on going process. I also was able to shoot some video for Interlachen but as I mentioned before I was a still photographer and that was my bread and butter. As far as Wellness TV and Interlachen go I was at most of the meetings as well.

From my experience of my Practicum work, when it comes to working in the news industry I can say I never really wanted to work in the news industry in the first place. I am here to learn how to make a production work and to sharpen my skills as a cameraman both still and motion, heighten my editing skills, and make videos that people will appreciate and like. Though in this process I also picked up some good interview skills, writing skills, and general reporting skills that I have found these skills useful both in school and life. Due to my experience I have given thought to perhaps becoming a freelance journalist/photographer in some far away third world country or perhaps in a war, something interesting and intense like that. However my end result is to run an in house production for big business. I do know that the skills that I have collected here though will help me get to that point. For example I have decided to shoot portraits for people for a fee in the coming year. I have the ability and there is demand so why not. However I do not see myself being a reporter, nor a camera man for a reporter. I may do this for a time or just to have a job but as I mentioned it is not my end goal. I value the skills that I have learned this semester, this is why I came here. I knew that I needed these skills and I knew I had natural talent in this area, so it seemed like the logical choice. So in short I did not want to be in the news industry at all, before Practicum and after it, I find the idea acceptable. Not acceptable for life but for a piece of my life for sure and I think that my experience in the news industry will be a lot of fun if it comes to that, only the future will tell.

A late night love entry

This is gonna be a long one. From 4:30 to 5:30 on Monday (10/18) I was in the Wellness TV meeting. I found out that Consuelo had been hurt and that our packages were do next week. We disscussed the show and shed some love on Consuelo. Then Michele, Shannah, Kayle, Kim, and myself stayed after and discussed the package that we needed started and completed in a week (no problem). Total 1 hour

So I need an interview. I walk around asking questions and trying to track down a track coach (get it?). I find one (of coarse) dude's name was Coach Moreno (nice guy) dude says I can't do an interview till next week, I say I need it sooner, dude says can't do it, I insist...dude says 10 am tomorrow. This takes place Tuesday morning (10/19) from 9 to 9:30. Later around 3:30 I need the camera but Dakota has it so I go with her and help her out holding the sticks and wondering around like a child in a fun new place that I hadn't yet been to called the theater department (delightfully strange people). The lady that Dakota and Maggie went to shoot couldn't do it then and I get the camera 4:20. I end up in Kayle's room and we start writing up questions for Moreno (she's a wonderful help). Just cause I'm there with a camera I set it up and me and Kayle interview her roommate Erika for the package. I get back at the hole in the wall office of Wellness TV (seriously our closet door isn't even attached). Michele is there and she deletes tons of videos from the camera that were taking up space to the point of a full hard drive....the camera actually became full 15 seconds after I completed the interview in Kayle's room (lucky I know). Then she captures the interview on the computer. This is all done by 6. Total 3 hours

Its 10 am tomorrow (10/20) and I'm interviewing Coach Moreno with Michele. She did the camera jazz I popped the questions and everything ran like clock work. We went back to the closet and stated capturing and script writing. Dakota and Maggie came in and got the camera or something and then we all rode to the comm department in my single cab truck, interesting seating Michele got pics lol, 1 hour. I attended the Interlocken meeting at 12 till 12:30, I didn't sign up for anything though (to much Wellness TV). At 2:30 I told everyone in the fitness package to be at the closet to shoot student interviews and b-roll. However to my chagrin I did not request the camera for that time and Dakota had it (we should have two) however never let good help sit around so Kim, Shannah and I wrote scripts for the package and Michele edited the video we had till 4. Total 3 hours

Thursday morning now (10/21), Kim and I began shooting B-roll and interviews from 10am to 12pm. We went to Wal-mart and killed on some B-roll, then we interviewed two probably unwise interviews for a health show because one looked like she hadn't slept in a few days and was smoking and the other had a t-shirt on that showed a potato turning into french fries. Not surprisingly they didn't have very good answers when asked how they got a sweat going, but hey we were running late and we had gotten a couple nos in a row. So we rocked it. Later I went to the closet to meet with Michele, she was editing when I got there (woman is a life saver, seriously get her a reward) I filmed her doing the stand up for the package. Then we filmed people running the lake (witch I love to do, they are my little unsuspecting models) and went into the gym to film some peeps working out. Then we upload our catch I watched her edit job thus far and we bounced around ideas for a while and eventually left at 6. Total 3.5 hours

Friday and the package is almost done! At 4pm I walk up the closet and Michele is editing (so studious). We talk about the video how we want it to look, what I think about this and that etc. Eventually we have a final product and I love it Michele did a great job and I text everyone thank you and tell them the deed is done. This happens at 5:30. Total 1.5 hours

Monday (10/25) I attend the Wellness TV meeting we talked about the problems we have been having with the last video that didn't air due to computer problems I guess, and the fact that one package wasn't completed so we were waiting on that. Then we looked towards the future and talked about the coming package. Most of them were already done due to preexisting videos that had been made so we announced what we were gonna do and got on with it. Interesting idea popped up from Dakota though, I pitched a package idea and she said it should be a show, so now I gotta pitch it to you Bradford. total 1 hour

Friday (10/1) at 4 o'clock me and Tosha tried to interview Michale for the second time, but did not have the camera. We waited 30 minutes and Tosha showed me some stuff on Final Cut. On the way out we saw Consualo and Maggie with the camera ha ha. (30 mins)
Monday (10/4) went to the Health TV meeting it lasted for 30 mins then Maggie, Consualo, Tosha, Krissy and myself ended up in the wellness center to interview Michale. Tosha and Maggie shot the interview and Krissy, Consualo and I discussed packages and the show for another 30 mins. (1 hour)
Webnesday (10/6) after convocation Krissy and I went to Wellness TV's little hide out and met up with Tosha and Lauren. We shot b-roll and talked about when editing was happening.  That was from 11 to 12 so an hour and from there I went to the year book meeting which lasted another 30 mins. I signed up to shot the Music Gale. Later that day I ended up in the hide out again for some editing lessons from 8:50 to 9:20. (2 hours)
Thursday after Broadcast J. I went with Lauren to the hide out and shot one scene as a package reporter and layed the voice over tracks. This took place from 3 to 3:45. (45 mins) Later I went to Branscomb and shot stills for year book on the Music Gale from 7:30 to 7:45. (15 mins) day total (1 hour)

Blog Paper 500 Words

My experience with practicum thus far as been enjoyable, the people are fun and exciting and I enjoy the fact that we all share a common interest in media production. I have learned much already through the more experienced students and teachers. I have increased my “media vocabulary” significantly, I remember back in high school no one new what to call anything, now I can say B-roll, A-roll, sticks, and for the most part people know what I am talking about. Also I have become more familiar with a news oriented production, which is highly based off interviews so I have been able to practice that side of my skill set, in the past I did more skits and comedy type shows.
I have joined the Wellness TV and Interlocken groups and have been enjoying them. Wellness TV is very professional and it is great to have the help of others to make a complete show. Everyone breaks up in groups to make their package and collectively it all makes a show. It is a lot of fun to see what everyone else did and to enjoy the end result. In Interlocken I have the opportunity to do a lot of photography, which in the past I never really got a chance to do but have always been interested in, so I have enjoyed broadening my skill set. Bob, Bivens and Patrick have all helped me with this new skill and I have found myself comfortable with adjusting the apiture of the camera for night shooting and adjusting the shutter speed for sports shooting. Also if these two things wont make your camera shoot they way you want you can always change the ISO.
Something that I have begun noticing as well is how much I have been learning about Macs. I have to upload, photos, videos, papers, edit videos, and research on the Macs provided. So me being a PC guy it has really been weird but I am now very comfortable with the Macs and actually like using them.
Since most of the stuff I do for school is news oriented, as I mentioned I have become quit good in dealing with people and their “fear” of the media as well. When I conduct interviews I make sure to distract the person from the camera or recorder by placing in slightly out of their sight and keeping their attention on me. This has helped out a lot with interviews, I also smile a lot to make them comfortable and ignore the equipment myself so that they tend to forget about it to. When taking pictures of people I’ll sometimes tell them how good of a shot it was, I’ll ask if I can take their picture and why I want to and people appreciate that which gives me good shots. Sometimes I’ll even show the people a picture real quick so that they know I am showing them in a good way.
In all it is all going really well I am adding to my talents for that I am sure. Now I just need to find the proper outlet for my creative thought, but in the mean time I am going to continue to familiarize myself with how things are done around here and learn more about the skill sets and equipment that make it all happen.
