Final

I am being geared towards a cameraman, I want to get some work under my belt, make some connections and then apply for National Geographic and work with them. I would like the opportunity to be on board with making some documentaries during this period because eventually I want to start making my own documentaries.
As far as entry-level pay for camera work from what I have research tends to be around 30 thousand dollars a year. Which I am ok with, I plan on continuing to do photography on the side and make money doing that. Also I will more than likely be involved with more than one show. I cannot see myself sitting around all day and once school is gone there will be more time to be filled. I may have to start by being the guy who careers the equipment around and occasionally gets to shoot or has the worst camera, but I am confident that my eye and my in field work ethic will allow me to advance quickly. I think that most camera operators are lazy and I and very much of a mover, I am a different person when I’m getting paid or trying to prove myself. There have been several incense’s where I was able to get a shot, especially with stills that many people where not able to get simply because I had the ability and drive to climb to some high up platform and get what I needed.
The skills that are needed to be effective in a field like this, include a strong work ethic, willingness to work, self direction, confidence and remaining humble because there is always some senior camera operator or editor waiting to tear you down. If everything goes as planned I will be working with Under the Bridge Productions helping in gathering footage for a variety of programming for the VS. Network. I am scheduled to shoot with this company on the 17th of this month and plan on interning with them next semester and will hopefully work with them after that internship is complete.
I do not know of any particular people that I admire in the industry but I do know of two companies that I do. One being the above mentioned National Geographic I would love to work with them because I think they are the best of the best, I would see and learn a lot, and I would gain a lot of notoriety from working with them. The other being G4 TV, I think that they are young and exciting, they appeal to my casual laid back side and I think I would fit well with them personality wise. One show in particular that I am a fan of is Ninja Warrior, I do not know exactly what it is that I like about this show so much being as I do not watch a lot of TV anyway, but I would love to be apart of that show. The show is basically a huge obstacle course, whoever completes it gets a large cash prize and the title of Ninja Warrior and I want to do it.

Digging Deep Because My Blogging Is Weak!

Pulling out the notes for this one.

November 21st was the last day of shooting for WTV anchoring and unfortunately it was the only shoot that went down with problems. It took 3 hours with first addressing microphone issues, which to my knowledge never truly got figured out. Then we had to coordinate with other members of the WTV staff and communication department to get ahold of XLR cable (everyone was in class). Finally after some leg work between Dakota, Cynthia, and myself we got ahold of the goods then we shot the stand up and packed everything up and took it back to base. This took place from 8 to 11am.

October 22nd shop the Music Gala for Interlachen from 7 to 9:30pm then on the 24th I captured all the footage and edited it and delivered it. That whole process took 41/2 hours.

Final

This semester in practicum a learned a lot about resources, I was able to recruit students on projects that were either my own or I was involved in. It allowed me to be able to do more in a shorter amount of time. I also learned from this process that it is always; A. good to give the person the information/direction that they need at first and to then leave them alone to allow creativity. B. to always check/set everything the way that I want prior to shooting or editing and to minimize the bad footage collected. C. to acknowledge and comment on good work to empower the individual thus allowing me to further separate myself from the equation. D. to remain polite and thank everyone a lot so they know I appreciate the effort. E. Be the first one working to inspire the rest into action. In conjunction with that I have also become a better communicator. This helped with the above listed as well as for setting interviews and finding stories.
I learned that I need to re-introduce my week to week planner back into my life so I can know when I have to present articles. I sharpened my film angles probably because I shot LOTS of footage. I did do some stills for Interlachen but not much they were in yearbook creation mode this term and I was more material gatherer. So the vast majority of my hours came from Wellness TV, there were a core group of individuals that came together to make this show happen. WTV is understaffed hopefully its move to the communication building will bring awareness to this show. We had just enough people to have one group work on a package for each show but not enough to ever get a break. I had to bite my lip and get with it at times for this show but it all worked out. I became one of the full time anchors during this semester of shooting and was comfortable with that. From reviewing my performance I made adjustment like talking slower and opening my eyes more as well as avoiding unnecessary or awkward movements. I felt as if I improved with this role over the coarse. One time we did a live to tape show for WTV on the gym and I had no problems being sociable with the interviewees and the interviews went well.
I found strengths in people and have allowed working opportunities to flow in the direction of those people’s individual strengths as well as revealing where people didn’t know they were strong. Allowing each person to do more with less and stream lining as many projects as possible. The most common being the unwillingness to take the lead. Most just didn’t realize they don’t have to ask if it’s right, if it’s right. Also people for the most part want the direction to be given to them so they may perform the task so I would make people tell me how to complete the action so that they stop coming to me because they probably think I’m stupid but I don’t have to hold hands so it’s a win for both sides.
The vast majority of what I learned was techniques in cooperation with others to complete task. All the technical stuff I wrote about last term and nothing technical was really knew.
Have a great summer Bradford J

Practicum Midterm

Practicum Midterm
Dalton Davis

This semester I have defiantly been more involved in Wellness TV. I also am on the yearbook staff but last semester I spent more time doing yearbook stuff so my roles have flip flopped. In WTV I have become the full time anchor of the show so I have been trying to develop my news show personality and people tell me I do a good job so I am happy with this. I also still produce a package for each show, which I do a multitude of things for. I work the camera both tripod work and specialized shots, I perform interviews, both brief and lengthy interviews, I design scripts and write questions, I’ve done everything but edit (cause Michelle has that on lock). Now of coarse none of this I do without help from the WTV staff. One thing that has defiantly changed this semester is that I utilize the Practicum students much more than before. I started looking at the hours I was investing into Practicum and realized I was doing to much, there are poor little Practicum students out there all alone n the word with no hours, so like a momma bird I feed them. Now obviously that’s an over dramatization but I think it is funny. So directing the students to help has alleviated a lot of my responsibilities and brought new ones as well. However this is the way that they must learn cause it is the way I did so its just natural.

In yearbook I have only taken one set of pictures and I am doing a another set tomorrow, so I haven’t had a huge impact there but I did write a paper for Convo for the yearbook and I assisted Austin in getting some people geared up to take video for the yearbook. On the real I didn’t want to do it and it needed to be done so I just started chatting some Practicum students up (the ones who need hours of coarse) and let them have their field day with it. The only other thing that comes to mind on yearbook is Jessica asked me to brainstorm on some event/activities that the staff could do together for next year and I found that pretty easy to do and I think planning some fun events for my people will be a rewarding experience.

In recap of the semester thus far though I feel as if I am in the transition faze of being the go to guy to get things done, to being the go to guy to coordinate everyone else to get things done. And the chain works up the line. The reason for this is familiarity with the system and the younger ones will soon make this transition as well, I still have a lot to learn and I might have even been slacking a bit on my work but its all working out and I am enjoying myself, so I guess I’ll just keep on slipping into the future.

Across the Pond

Most communication majors recognize Charlotte Brereton as the charismatic Brit around the department. However this Brit has got more going on than just her noticeable accent and charm. Charlotte is a student at Florida Southern College, a comm. major, and a member of the tennis team. She enjoys working with a camera and is enrolled in an acting class as well.

Charlotte had the rare opportunity recently to work as a production assistant at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. The event featured Paul Simon who is a legendary musical performer that has been in act since 1965.  The oldest theater in America The Academy of Music was holding its own 125th anniversary and the celebration was one of very formal attire, class, and lovely music.

Charlott.jpg
Everyone at the anniversary was to be dressed in full gown or tux and tail. Charlotte served as an escort for the talent and had several duties to perform during and even before the event. She was there four days before the event and was in charge of catering and caring for the talent, including getting the clothes, food, accommodations, and rides. She also had to order furniture for the event and help out in several ways there as well; she worked 14-hour shifts each day.

This is the third show that Charlotte has helped to produce, Charlotte said, “I love doing it and it is going to look great on my resume.” As for the future of her work Charlotte says, I see this as a step towards my future and my favorite part is when the production comes together.”

So the charismatic Brit has a couple things going for her where she decides to let those talents take her is of coarse up to here but already she has done and seen some things that many people would like to do and she is only 21 years old.
