Final Post

This semester for Practicum I was heavily involved in Wellness TV and the Interlachen. I also turned in some photos of my spot news to The Southern. In Wellness TV I did a variety of things including write scripts, camera work, stand up reporting, voice recorded reporting, interviews, I helped edit from time to time with Michelle and Tosha, and I was also involved in the brain storming sessions with the group as a whole and with the individual packages groups. I had a lot of fun with Wellness TV and that is where the bulk of my Practicum hours and efforts went too. For Interlachen I was mainly a photographer. I took pictures of sports, campus events, club events, and sorority/fraternity events. I also wrote a paper for Interlachen on Convocation. It is still incomplete because it must cover all the Convocations so it is an on going process. I also was able to shoot some video for Interlachen but as I mentioned before I was a still photographer and that was my bread and butter. As far as Wellness TV and Interlachen go I was at most of the meetings as well.

From my experience of my Practicum work, when it comes to working in the news industry I can say I never really wanted to work in the news industry in the first place. I am here to learn how to make a production work and to sharpen my skills as a cameraman both still and motion, heighten my editing skills, and make videos that people will appreciate and like. Though in this process I also picked up some good interview skills, writing skills, and general reporting skills that I have found these skills useful both in school and life. Due to my experience I have given thought to perhaps becoming a freelance journalist/photographer in some far away third world country or perhaps in a war, something interesting and intense like that. However my end result is to run an in house production for big business. I do know that the skills that I have collected here though will help me get to that point. For example I have decided to shoot portraits for people for a fee in the coming year. I have the ability and there is demand so why not. However I do not see myself being a reporter, nor a camera man for a reporter. I may do this for a time or just to have a job but as I mentioned it is not my end goal. I value the skills that I have learned this semester, this is why I came here. I knew that I needed these skills and I knew I had natural talent in this area, so it seemed like the logical choice. So in short I did not want to be in the news industry at all, before Practicum and after it, I find the idea acceptable. Not acceptable for life but for a piece of my life for sure and I think that my experience in the news industry will be a lot of fun if it comes to that, only the future will tell.
